Solar boom in Germany: 17 GW more and 100 GW installed performance!
The boom in photovoltaics in Germany is increasing rapidly! In 2024, impressive 17 gigawatts (GW) were installed new capacities, 10 percent more than in the previous year. This is a milestone, because the entire installed performance has now exceeded the magical limit of 100 gigawatts. Around 14 percent of the total electricity consumption in Germany is now generated by solar energy, as reported by the Federal Association of Solar Economy. It is particularly noteworthy that most new capacities, about 38 GW, come from solar modules on home roofs. However, growth drivers are the solar parks that have a remarkable plus of 40 percent and thus make up over a third of the new investments.
In addition, the balcony power plants, small solar systems for personal use, are characterized by strong growth. Their installed capacity doubled to around 0.7 GW in 2024. In comparison, solar modules on company roofs made up almost 30 percent of the total performance, with an increase of 25 percent for new installations.
According to the federal government's plans, the total performance should be doubled to around 215 gigawatt by 2030. "However, reaching the next milestones of the energy transition is not a sure -fire success," said Carsten Körnig, general manager of the Federal Association of Solar Industry.
Development of energy performance in Europe
On the other hand, it can be seen that the global energy requirement is enormous. According to an overview of performance variables, we can see that the top performance of large wind turbines is between 3 and 9 megawatts (MW). In comparison, large photovoltaic systems achieve 15 times the performance of the importance of renewable energies. The modern technology, as used in the solar systems, has continuously improved and shows that sustainable energy generation is possible without fossil fuels. With this increase in renewable energies, Europe could be on the way to reach its climate goals, especially since photovoltaics and wind energy are the two main technologies according to IPCC to counteract global warming, as well as the Wikipedia reported.
In the meantime, Austria has also benefited from this upswing: the installed performance has doubled in recent years, which shows that the trend towards using solar energy is blowing beyond the German borders. Photovoltaics is not just a vision of the future, but a current reality!
