Pork keeping in transition: Constitutional court tips over transitional periods!
Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - A dramatic change is imminent for pig farming! The Constitutional Court has declared the long transition periods for full column floors in pig farming as unconstitutional. So far, existing companies have been able to continue working with these keeping conditions for up to 23 years. According to ots.at , new regulations are now urgently developed, since the Federal Government has shorter transition periods until June 2025 to define. This development could significantly influence the fate of many pigs.
New light on animal welfare
The transition periods of 17 years for old companies were a hot iron. The Constitutional Court has made it clear that the interests of the farmers: the inside were too heavily weighted and that animal welfare was neglected, as vgt.at . Nevertheless, crucial questions about accommodation and space for the pigs remained unclear. According to experts, the demands for a better standard in terms of space and straw litter are not yet off the table - it is expected that the federal government will finally make nails with their heads.
ddr. Martin Balluch, chairman of the VGT, was optimistic about the decision of the highest court and emphasized the urgency that new standards are implemented quickly and effectively. The dispute over the full column floor could not only experience timely turns not only in pig farming, but also in the cattle mast. The pressure on the government is growing to present clear and fair solutions that meet the needs of the animals.
