Austria's organic boom: growth despite challenges!
The demand for organic products is growing rapidly in Austria! During a press conference on the occasion of the organic subjects in Nuremberg, the chairwoman of Bio Austria, Barbara Riegler, explained: "Bio is always more popular and is a fixture in the consumer behavior of Austrian consumers: Inside." Despite the challenges in organic agriculture, the loyalty of consumers remains unbroken. The latest figures show an increase in the organic purchase value of 3.7 percent and a man-made increase of 5.5 percent-a positive signal for the industry.
But the situation is not unproblematic! Around 1,000 organic farms have been eliminated from the sector since 2022, which requires a stabilizing trend in operating development. Riegler emphasized that it was crucial to cover the growing demand for organic products and to support both existing and new companies. "We have to support the existing businesses so that they remain loyal to organic and encourage new companies to switch to organic in a future -oriented manner," she said. This challenge is underlined by the recommendations of the strategic dialogue, initiated by the Commission President of the Leyen, that should serve as a guide for future agricultural policy.
Important decisions are before
According to Riegler, the next federal government must take decisive measures to actively support the expansion of biological agriculture. A representative party survey has shown that all parties surveyed promote biological agriculture. Riegler expects this support to be anchored in the government program. "Only through decisive action can the political goal of an expansion of organic agriculture be implemented effectively in practice," she appeals.
With 23 percent of agricultural companies that work organically and 27.3 percent of the total agricultural area, Austria is well positioned in international comparison. In the global ranking for organic products, Austria takes third place with a market share of 11 percent, behind Denmark and Switzerland. These successes document the strength of the Austrian organic market and the need to promote biological cultivation, as also prove the current data of the Rollama.
