Austria presses a stop button in family reunification: new asylum measures!
The Austrian government discussed measures to redesign the asylum system in a current meeting. Integration Minister Claudia Plakolm emphasized that Austria has now reached its capacity limits and announced that the "stop key" was pressed to protect the system from overwhelming. This drastic decision is underlined by the significant burden on the Austrian school system, which is increasingly confronted with non -alphabetized refugees. Plakolm announced that this position was officially sent to the EU Commission to point out the challenges that arise from immigration.
A central point of this initiative is the possibility for Austria to deviate from EU asylum law if necessary, especially if the systems are overloaded. In order to implement the new measures as soon as possible, a special regulation can be activated by a regulation of the Federal Government, which must be decided in agreement with the main committee of the National Council. This regulation should apply for the time being until the end of September 2026, which illustrates the urgency of the situation.
EU context and challenges
One of the challenges with which Austria is confronted is related to the larger migrant flows that have burdened the EU's external borders in recent years.
