Koralmbahn stop at Graz Airport: Politics protest against cancellation!

In a heated exchange of blows around the stop of the Koralmahn at Graz Airport, the Styrian state government went to the barricades. Traffic Councilor Claudia Holzer (FPÖ) said yesterday, on February 21, 2025, extremely surprising about the press releases that the planned railway stop described as canceled. After a recent conversation with ÖBB CEO Andreas Matth, she explained that the technical feasibility continues to exist. Holzer announced that it would be stronger to implement the stop for the implementation of the stop, since she expected pragmatism and a better understanding of economic issues, as Orf Steiermark reported.

The stop is considered the central requirement of Styria to the upcoming federal government. Governor Mario Kunasek (FPÖ) underlined the importance of this stop for the airport location, which is essential for the entire Graz region and secures jobs. Deputy Governor Manuela Khom (ÖVP) also emphasized that the implementation of the stop was originally planned and is technically possible. "It is incomprehensible why the Koralbahn should drive past the airport without stopping; this affects the attractiveness of the Koralbahn and the connection to the airport," says Khom. These arguments were also taken up by Arf that pointed out the importance of the stop for the region.

According to the ÖBB, the current plans are not geared towards the stop at the airport, but changes could be made if the political will is present. Experts expect several years until the concrete implementation and a priority set to the operational start of the KoralMahn in December. Before commissioning, the need for an airport stop is analyzed, since there is already an S-Bahn station near the airport.
