EU summit: Austria demands fair peace for Ukraine!
Villach, Österreich - On March 5, 2025, a central meeting took place in the EU main committee in which the new government members under the direction of Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker, European Minister Claudia Plakolm and Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger discussed the challenges of the Ukraine War. Stocker emphasized the urgency of a "sustainable and just" peace as well as the need for negotiations with "all actors", including Ukraine itself, as well as orf.at . In this context, the support of US President Donald Trump was also discussed for peace negotiations, but warned Stocker that short-term goals should not be pursued at the cost of long-term stability.
While the FPÖ vehemently performed against further financial support for Ukraine, which was considered an extension of the conflict, the federal government confirmed the need to show a uniform European approach. Plakolm and Meinl-Reisinger called for a confident EU strategy that also consider security guarantees for Ukraine. The minister advocates that Europe should not become a game ball of global powers ", but has to take responsibility for its security interests, such as apa.at
urgency of peace negotiations
Meinl-Reisinger made it clear that the war was not only about territories, but about the sovereignty of Ukraine and lifestyle in Europe. The pressure on Europe grew and it called for a reform of the security architecture to strengthen European defense ability. At the same time, the FPÖ expressed sharp criticism of the negotiations between the United States and Russia, which in their opinion is not in the best interest in Ukraine. These different opinions illustrated the tensions within the EU and the need for a clear, common strategy.
The challenge with which the new federal government is confronted was further reinforced by the current developments in diplomacy and the different perspectives on financial support and military help to Ukraine. The feeling of urgency is shown in the discussions about security guarantees and the integrative role of Ukraine in future peace talks - a topic that is now the focus of the European agenda.
