Hard -related numbers: Road fats in Styria are climbing again!

The number of traffic fatalities in Styria has experienced an alarming increase this year, with a total of 78 deaths until the middle of the year, as reported by the Austria Verkehrsclub (VCÖ). This represents a worrying trend, since the numbers were already high with 70 deaths in the previous year. Car inmates and motorcyclists are particularly affected, which together make up a significant part of the traffic victims. In 2021, on the other hand, the number of traffic fatalities was only 50 at a historical low.

The VCÖ mentions distraction and excessive speed as the main causes of accidents. According to the mobility organization, Styria in Lower Austria and Upper Austria is the federal state with the third highest number of traffic dead this year. In many European countries there are strict speed limits on dangerous open -air roads that could help reduce the number of accidents. The VCÖ therefore demands that the government accept the cell phone at the wheel as a crime in the pre -notification system. Statistics show that the use of mobile phones during driving increases the risk of accidents enormously, as well as excessive speed.

The urgency of measures

The need for increased traffic safety measures is becoming increasingly clear. "People suddenly tear traffic accidents out of life," VCÖ expert Katharina Jaschinsky makes aware of and emphasizes the pain for the relatives. The economic costs of traffic accidents in Styria amounted to around 1.5 billion euros in 2023. More public traffic connections and a significantly declining pace could also help increase security on the streets. The VCÖ recommends that municipalities should be given the opportunity to implement tempotuits, for example speed 30, to improve the security in residential areas and school routes.

The pressure on the upcoming federal government is growing to take suitable measures. The number of injuries also remains worrying; In the first half of 2023 alone, 2,879 people were injured, 531 of them seriously. The Verkehrsclub Austria urgently demands that the government act immediately in order to reduce the increasing number of accidents through immediate measures. Every year the road not only brings danger, but also destruction in many families, like Jaime Jakub, explains an expert in the field of traffic safety. It is time that these challenges and the need for drastic changes are taken seriously.
