Electric cars without funding: Are you still worthwhile for Austria's driver?

Electric cars without funding: Are you still worthwhile for Austria's driver?

electromobility has become increasingly important in Europe, especially in Austria and Germany. The switch to electric cars is forced for both financial and environmental protection reasons. State funding has contributed significantly to the popularity of electric vehicles, but these are now incentives on the brink. Against the background of the loss of numerous funding programs, the question arises whether electric cars will be a worthwhile investment in the future. Econews reports that the support of the federal government, which was up to 5,000 euros, was exploited early and exhausted from February 2025 are no longer possible. This also deletes the funding for wall boxes.

Another point is the recent termination of the VAT exemption for photovoltaic systems and the lack of grants for new systems or wall boxes. From April 01, 2025, electric vehicles are also subject to new taxation due to the elimination of the standard consumption tax (Nova).

Financial incentives and new concepts

The measures taken could have significant effects on the demand for electric cars. Despite the challenges from the elimination of state incentives, a study by the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO) indicates the crucial role of tax incentives for the spread of electric vehicles. Enercity reports that the Federal Government presented a new concept for promoting e-mobility on December 12, 2024, which provides for new purchasing incentives through tax benefits. Buyers can receive 1,000 euros in credit for charging at public charging stations inside. There are also special depreciation for electrical company cars.

These measures could help people with low and medium -sized incomes. Further advantages such as raising the company car taxation limit should also be established. In contrast, the private purchase of electric cars from government funding remains largely excluded.

international view of electromobility

Great Britain and many other countries already offer extensive support measures. For example, buyers in Germany receive up to 9,000 euros for pure electric vehicles, while Norway is considered a European pioneer and in 2022 achieved an electrical share of over 54 % in new registrations. Andinet indicates that international support measures, such as tax relief and subsidies, are crucial to reduce the CO2 emissions to advance.

Despite the falling state incentives, electromobility remains an inexpensive and independent mobility option. Many owners of electric vehicles benefit from lower operating costs, a variety of grants in other countries and the constant improvement of the charging infrastructure. The temperatures for electric cars, both in Austria and global, continue to increase, even if there are currently challenges.
