E-mobility on record course: More electric cars than diesel in 2023!

Electromobility promotion in Austria is facing a turning point because the programs take place to support electric vehicles and charging stations. According to a current statement by Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, a record of funding applications was recorded in 2024, the vehicles that have been promoted by around 9,000 subsidized vehicles in 2020 in 202 in 2024. In the private sector in particular, around 62,000 electric vehicles were promoted, which underlines the growing acceptance and demand, as the Krone reported. The decline in funding has also led to a massive increase in vehicle registrations in the past few weeks.

successful e-mobility offensive

The statistics show that 2023 was a groundbreaking year for e-mobility in Austria. For the first time, more electric cars have been newly approved than diesel vehicles, specifically 47,621 new electric cars with a share of 19.9 percent. This is a success of the e-mobility offensive of the Ministry of Climate Protection, which provides a total of 114.5 million euros in 2024. These means contain both the government's e-mobility bonus as well as contributions from automotive and two-wheel importers, as from the BMK

For private individuals, there are incentives of up to 5,000 euros when buying an electric car and grants up to 600 euros for wall boxes. Larger, joint charging infrastructures are also supported up to 30,000 euros. Gewessler emphasizes: "The future on the street is electrical." These positive developments and the increasing numbers are not only a sign of change, but also a clear step towards a more sustainable and clean mobility in Austria. The citizens seem to be ready to take this path, which underlines the need for a secure continuation of the funding programs by the next federal government.
