Authorities fail in the event of a terrorist warning: who knew what?
After the fatal attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg, in which the alleged perpetrator Taleb Al A. has come into focus, the federal government is planning extensive investigations. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) announced that the authorities are intended to clarify which references to Al A. were known before the attack. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) will support the investigation in Saxony-Anhalt. Faeser emphasized that all backgrounds have to be informed, in particular the information already obtained and their processing, such as the FAZ reported.
Taleb Al A. is no stranger for the authorities. In 2013, he had already received a conviction for disruption to public peace before multiplemale judicial disputes and threats of acts of violence. However, this fact was not relevant in the context of its asylum procedure, which raises a critical question of dealing with the authorities with such warning signs. According to the BKA, there was a specific note from Saudi Arabia to Al A. in 2023, which was classified as unspecific, as the Tagesschau emphasized. Although he was sentenced to fines and had frequent contact with various authorities, he was not classified as a threat.
The abysses of Al A.'s past
his conflicts with the Central Council of Ex-Muslims raise questions. While he threatened to save Europe from "Islamization" during a court proceedings in 2024, his public defamation of the organization was not without consequences. A shocking report explains that he has been legally presenting the Central Council for years. It is now being examined whether despite this history with the security authorities there was a complete picture of Al A., while the interior committee and other bodies in the Bundestag will also deal with the case.
