Ampel coalition in the negotiation marathon: Print grows before Epiphany!
In the political coalition poker in Austria, the signs of intensive negotiations stand: The ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos are in the decisive phases of their conversations about a possible triple coalition. In a real negotiating marathon, reported today , the parties strive to come to a conclusion until the Epiphany. In view of the oppressive schedule, however, it is unclear whether this goal can be achieved as planned. By January 15, the parties must present specific measures to close 18 billion euros, since the EU Commission could decide on January 21.
The negotiations are anything but easy. As bundes- Government.de , the political mixture requires quick and effective decisions, especially in times when the health situation in Germany is also improved. Chancellor Scholz has found that Germany has better come through the current wave of infection than many neighbors, and expressed optimistic perspectives for the coming weeks. By March 20, numerous Corona restrictions are to be lifted in three stages, which could possibly still increase the political pressure on the traffic light coalition.
urgent measures and savings
A focus on financing and specific types of tax is characterized within the negotiations. Reports of possible “sins” on sugar, tobacco and alcohol as well as claims for a banking tax or an increase in property tax are in the room to close the gap in the budget. Despite the progress, concretions are still rare - the agreement on a complete concept is a priority before measures are made public. The next trial stages are already set to continue the discussions and to devote themselves to the pressing questions of budget consolidation.
While the coalition talks dominate the political agenda, the unrestricted control over the health system and the pandemic creation remains crucial. The Chancellor clearly appealed to the population not to overestimate optimism because the pandemic was not over and the vaccination campaign had to be continued.
