Red alarm level: Unemployment in Austria continues to rise!

The alarm bells ring: unemployment continues to rise in Austria and the hoped -for economic upswing is a long time coming. Renate Anderl, President of the Chamber of Labor (AK), urges: "The current labor market situation is worrying. Young people and employees in industry and trade are increasingly under pressure." Forecasts of the WIFO indicate a slight increase in employment of 0.6% in 2025, but at the same time an increase in unemployment is feared by 3%, which corresponds to a quota of 7.2%. This development presents many people with existential challenges, since essential aid measures are threatened by the decline in funds for the labor market service (AMS). From 2025 the federal government provides for less financial support, so that the livelihood security could be endangered for many, as Ams.at explained.

The Chamber of Labor therefore urgently demands that the funds and staff at the AMS urgently require to ensure targeted support in qualification. Anderl emphasizes: "In addition to good existence protection, we also have to invest more in the qualification of people for future -oriented professions." The need to invest in a strong labor market policy is becoming increasingly clearer, while the challenges by the current economic situation would present the working society with serious problems.
