1,676 rejections to limits: Dobrindt's hard line shows effect!
In the first two weeks of tightened controls at the German borders, 1,676 people were rejected. This is reported by the magazine "Focus", citing figures from the German Interior Ministry. Since April 24, 2025, two weeks after Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, the controls on the land borders have been significantly reinforced to reduce the number of unauthorized entry. At the first wave that took place after the measure was introduced, 739 people were rejected in the first week, including 51 asylum requests.
Dobrindt has announced that they are gradually increasing these rejections. He emphasized that the measures were not planned for a long time and that there would be exceptions for "vulnerable groups" such as children, pregnant women and the sick. This is part of his strategy to reduce the excessive demands of the asylum system in Germany "piece by piece". Dobrindt sees the current numbers as proof that the increased controls work and he thanked the federal police for their professional use.
increase in police presence
Dobrindt plans to increase the number of federal police officers at the limits. He will also withdraw an oral instruction from 2015, which prevented a rejection at the border. This decision was made by former Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière. Since September 2024 there have been border controls at all land borders in Germany.
The new federal government plans additional border controls and rejections from asylum seekers to react to irregular migration. Dobrindt relies on the German Asylum Act and European Law. Nevertheless, there is disagreement within the coalition about the admissibility of rejections. The SPD, represented by parliamentary group vice Sonja Eichwede, argues that flat -rate rejections are not in accordance with European law.
Current developments and legal bases
There are already initial rejections: Four Afghan citizens who had entered Luxembourg recently were rejected at the German border. Dobrindt still considers the number of income to be asylum, which fell to 36,000 in the first quarter of 2025, is still too high. This means a decline of 30,000 compared to the previous year, which underpins the urgency of its measures.
The police unions report that asylum and protection seekers are rejected, apart from people in need of protection. While Dobrindt and the government defend the measures, there are legal concerns about the procedure within the coalition and also in public, especially with regard to European legislation.
