Swarovski revolutionizes glass production: 11 million for green tub!

In a pioneering development, Swarovski presented a new glass melting tanks in Wattens, which could revolutionize the production of crystal glass. The company invested eleven million euros in this innovative project, on which 85 employees worked over a period of three years. A total of 33,000 working hours were worked. The new tub is the first in the world that is operated exclusively electrically in continuous operation and enables the production of 1,370 tons of additional crystal glass per year.

With this technology, Swarovski hopes that this technology will reduce the annual CO₂ emissions by up to 440 tons. The company pursues the ambitious goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and sees this new tub as a crucial step towards sustainability.

sustainability and women's promotion

Swarovski not only committed itself to the technology melting, but also social responsibility. According to the sustainability report by Swarovski , the company calls for the highest standards at its production locations to increase transparency and to improve the measurement of sustainability performance. A central topic for the company is the promotion of women, which is also reflected in the workforce: 77% of employees and the majority of customers are women.

The company is actively working on strengthening the role of women based on the UN principles for gender equality. In 2018, Swarovski, together with BSR, initiated the first multi-stakeholder examination for the promotion of women, which identified various challenges, including low wages and poor working conditions for women.

efficient resource use

Another important aspect of Swarovski's sustainability strategy is the water. Water is an essential resource for the production of crystals and gemstones, and the company has implemented extensive measures to reuse water. 76% of water consumption are currently being recycled in the production sites, while in Wattens even 99% of the water are cleaned and reused from the crystal cutting process.

In addition, pilot programs for water management in cooperation with local authorities and NGOs are implemented in Thailand and Plattsburgh, USA, USA. These programs aim to strengthen the resistance to environmental dangers and prepare municipalities for climate change. The Swarovski Waterschool also promotes sustainable water use for future generations.

industry in the change to the circular economy

The challenges of sustainability are a topic that affects the entire industry. The Fraunhofer IPK emphasizes how important it is that companies implement the principles of the circular economy. This is not just about reuse of products at the end of their life, but also about the collaborative development of solutions within the value chains of the respective industries.

The IPK focuses on innovative technologies to facilitate the identification of old parts and thus enable them to reuse. It is essential that companies are expanding their ability to cooperate in order to pursue sustainability goals comprehensively and significantly reduce CO₂ footprint.
