Refurbishment of the L 121: Finally the end with potholes and dangers!

Weißenthurm, Deutschland - A dilapidated crossing area is finally being renovated! The state company Mobility (LBM) Cochem-Zell has announced the extensive repair work on L 121 and K 44. From November 18 to 22, 2024, this critical section of the route will be completely blocked in order to carry out the urgently needed renewal of the asphalt layer. Potholes, cracks and furrows had put the street into a dangerous state that not only presented drivers, but also the heavy goods traffic.

The renovation is an important step for more security on this busy route, which is particularly stressed by trucks. Mayor Thomas Przybylla and the Weißenthurm Association have been working for a solution for years. The unsustainable road conditions led to a signature campaign in the summer of 2023, which was widely supported and finally attracted the attention of the Minister of Transport Daniela Schmitt. In June 2024 the redeeming promise came to the renovation, and Przybylla expressed his relief: "I am very happy that our efforts will finally bear fruit."

Details for renovation and diversion

The renovation work start on November 18, 2024. First, the damaged asphalt layer is removed, followed by the installation of a new asphalt layer and asphalt cover layer. During the construction work, a redirection is set up: road users from Koblenz are led via the L 126 and K 44, while the traffic of Weißenthurm is diverted via K 96 and L 125. The diversion routes that are clearly visible will mark, and the LBM Cochem-Koblenz and the Neuwied road maintenance department ask for understanding for possible impairments.

The long delay of the renovation was due to the planned downgrading of the L 121 to a district road, since the route no longer met the requirements of a state road. Despite these hurdles, local politicians fought tirelessly for the urgently needed construction work to ensure the safety of road users.
