Change of government in the National Council: Who follows and who remains?
Vienna, Österreich - The National Council, Austria's most important parliament, has gathered for a crucial session today. It could have been the last meeting before the next federal government was formed under a black and red pink alliance. As vienna.at , numerous mandates in parliament will also be shifted with the new government, since many upcoming ministers and state secretaries will have to cover their current mandates.
The ÖVP in particular is affected by these changes. Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Klaudia Tanner and Claudia Plakolm are currently in the National Council, but could soon start their government offices. Irene Neumann-Hartberger and Rudolf Taschner are ready to move up. There is also an exciting development in the SPÖ: women's boss Eva Maria Holzeitner is traded as a safe government access and could bring Elisabeth Feichtinger back to parliament. Muna Duzdar could also move up if party leader Andreas Babler should vacate his place. The NEOS are also faced with changes, since Beate Meinl-Reisinger is expected to hand over her mandate, whereby Ines Holzegger could move up.
The legal independence of the MPs
like parlament.gv.at , the members of the National Council and the Federal Council are legally independent and not tied to those of their voters or parties. However, this independence brings with it a political responsibility: MPs are elected to implement the programs of their parties. It is expected that you are committed to the interests of your voters, even if you cannot be legally forced to do so. The behavior of the deputies is evaluated by the voters in the next election system.
