Austria in upheaval: ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS before historical coalition!
Austria's political stage is head: the ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos are moving closer together and planning a possible government alliance. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen described the negotiations as "on the home stretch" and emphasizes that such a cooperation is necessary in view of the pressing challenges. The chairs of the parties met for intensive discussions that were continued on Saturday morning. The focus is on topics such as internal security, education and affordable life, while a rapid stabilization of the political situation is challenged, since the geopolitical and budgetary situation is challenging, as Andreas Babler emphasizes the priority of state interests and demands more willingness to compromise. Despite this positive momentum, there are concerns within the NEOs. The Tyrolean MP Dominik Oberhofer expressed that he lacks reforms in the suggestions and warned of an introduction to a coalition without clear reform goals. A vote among the NEOS members planned for March 2 could be decisive. After this meeting, a possible commitment on March 3 or 4, such as reported.
After a failed first attempt in January, when the NEOS broke off the talks, the ÖVP-SPÖ coalition has only a short majority. The FPÖ sharply criticized the negotiations and described it as the "greatest voter fraud". Meanwhile, the green party leader, Werner Kogler, shows support for the possible coalition talks and sees a risk of a right -wing extremist chancellor, which underlines the urgency of the conversations. The coming week could therefore be decisive for Austria's political future.
