Austria in political chaos: When does van der Bellen speak?
Wien, Österreich - Austria is faced with a political upheaval: after the failure of the coalition negotiations and the resignation of Karl Nehammer as Chancellor, the time for a new government forms. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has announced that he will turn to the population on Sunday to discuss the situation, while the country's political leaders are preparing for an intensive discussion marathon. FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl, who received 28.8 percent of the vote in the last elections, is also in a strong position with his party. The country wonders how a government can be formed without the freedom after all other parties have rejected their willingness to work with Kickl, as OE24 reported.
Spicy situation in parliament
The previous elections led to a stalemate in the National Council, which also complicates government formation. President van der Bellen commissioned Nehammer, who took second place with 26.3 percent of the vote with the formation of a new government. The problem? The Freedom Party is categorically excluded from the other three parties, which means that Kickl cannot find any coalition partners. "This is clear and unequivocal," said van der Bellen and suggested that negotiations with a possible cooperation between the ÖVP and the Social Democrats or the NEOS, as reported.
Nehammer has announced that it will work hard to form a stable government that focuses on business, immigration and integration. But at the moment there is no guarantee that these conversations will be successful. "I can't tell you today whether we will come to government formation," said Nehammer. Meanwhile, Kickl expressed his displeasure with the situation and promised his followers that the last word had not yet been spoken. Austria therefore faces an uncertain political future, while the parties struggle for a sustainable solution.
