Migrants in healthcare: key role and challenges for everyone!
On December 10, 2024, society is once again facing a major challenge: health care for migrants. According to a report by the Life in Europe about 86,7 million international migrants, many of them have one Right to health care, which is often ignored. Migration is a normal phenomenon that helps people seek better living conditions. Nevertheless, migrants are often exposed to health risks that affect their well -being.
A report of the Federal Center for Political Education (BPB) emphasizes that people with a migration background are a heterogeneous group. Factors such as the country of origin, social integration and personal experiences during migration play a crucial role in their health. It is particularly striking that migrants, especially those with refugees, are more likely to rely on emergency care, since they often have no access to regular medical services. This is often due to the lack of information about the health system or due to access restrictions that are defined in the Asylum Seekers Benefit Act.
Health strategies for migrants
The WHO recently passed an action plan for health care for refugees and migrants in Europe, which is to be implemented by 2030. The same access to health care for everyone, regardless of their migration status, is of central importance. It is also emphasized that precarious health behavior and psychosocial stress during and after migration must also be observed. A focus is on combating discrimination and promoting social integration.
These measures are urgently necessary, since many migrants have access to medical services only for emergencies in the first 18 months of their arrival. In particular, psychological help, which is often crucial for integration and personal well -being, falls by the wayside. In order to actually improve health care, social and health conditions for migrants in Europe must be changed.
