Chancellor Nehammer surprises with the reverse advent calendar for girls
The Christmas magic took a special turn this year: Chancellor Karl Nehammer surprised a five-year-old girl named Pia, who suffers from the rare Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome. In an innovative approach, he organized an "reverse" advent calendar, in which small gifts were added every day to increase Pia's anticipation to the festival. "Now he is completely filled," said Nehammer proudly on Instagram and showed numerous gifts such as books, stickers and cuddly toys. This gesture is supposed to give Pia a small Christmas surprise, such as Today. reported.
But that's not all that Nehammer had to say at Christmas time. He took the opportunity for his traditional Christmas mail, in which he not only expresses contemplative wishes, but also informs about the current status of the coalition negotiations. He emphasized: "Austria is a highly developed welfare state in which we take responsibility for each other." While he emphasizes the cohesion of society, he nevertheless turned against radicals and simplified views, which indicates the political mood. "Negotiations on the formation of a new government are currently in full swing," continued Nehammer. This need for a solid government formation indicates the challenges with which the political landscape is faced. Nevertheless, there are mixed feelings internally at the ÖVP about the impending coalition with the SPÖ, such as Exxpress.at describes.
Nehammer is thus a chancellor who cleverly stages the interaction between personal engagement for the weaker and hard political reality. His measures dare to make the balancing act between empathy and the pragmatic need for a stable change of government. It remains to be seen whether this leads to a harmonious Christmas for Pia and at the same time brings the desired political stability.
