Habeck as a candidate for chancellor: Greens start with a new momentum in election campaign!

The Greens took a crucial step towards the Bundestag election 2025 at their party congress in Wiesbaden. Robert Habeck was voted the Chancellor candidate with an overwhelming 96.48 percent of the vote. Together with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, he forms a "top duo" for the election campaign. Habeck described his candidacy as a "offer of confidence" and emphasized that he wanted to actively tackle the challenges. The party is currently in surveys of around 11 percent and is preparing for the new elections in February.

Söder remains with his rejection

CSU boss Markus Söder, meanwhile, has again excluded a coalition with the Greens. In the ARD show "Report from Berlin" he explained: "Black-green is not an option for us." He criticized the Greens as "old faces" and accused them of maneuvering Germany economically in a bad location. Söder called for a "real change of direction" and described Habeck as "the main reason for the bad economic situation".

The Greens reorganized after the break of the traffic light coalition and chose a new management team with Franziska Brantner and Felix Banaszak. During the party congress, an application was also passed, which speaks out for a prohibition procedure against the AfD. The party sees itself as responsibility to defend democracy and the rule of law. In addition, the importance of climate protection was emphasized, with activist Luisa Neubauer asked the Greens to set clear ecological standards in the election campaign.
