Traditional forging: art or dying craft?
Suetschach, Österreich - In Feistritz the Schmiedeverein Suetschach with passion and skill glowing iron and keeps the traditional art of forging alive. Since 2002, the members of the association have been committed to preserving the craft between mechanized alternatives and modern art. In a lovingly restored smithy, which was set up by ex-chairman Josef Moric, wrought enthusiasts of all ages come together to exchange ideas and work on traditional techniques. The unmistakable smell of coal and forged metal fulfills the room while the participants work on various projects.
The Schmiedekirchtag is particularly impressive. Schmiede from Slovenia, Switzerland, Germany and Austria come together to create creative and environmentally friendly works of art. The association emphasizes the importance of the craft for cultural identity and sees itself as responsibility to traditionally pass on to the next generation. This is particularly necessary because this year there is no single smithy apprentice in Carinthia and the job runs the risk of being forgotten.
events and promoting young talent
In addition to the artisanal activities, the traditional “New Year's Eve” is also organized on December 31 in the village smithy in Suetschach. The association sees it as its task to inspire students and young people for forging and to make them deal with the craft. "We are actively approaching schools to convey the fascination of the smithy and to strengthen contact with the youth," explains chairman Ewald Jakobitsch. At a time when the craft in the digital world is often pushed into the background, the use of the association corresponds to the desire to pass on and adapt this traditional art.
