Back horses save Lüneburg's forests - tradition in harmony with nature!

In the cool and wet city forest of Lüneburg, back horses have been doing valuable services at the wooden harvest for over five years. What started as a pilot project has now developed into an established method in order to gently transport felled tree trunks from the forest. City forester Per-Ole Wittenburg explains: "We use the back horses as a sensible addition to machines, especially in sensitive soils or rough terrain." This sustainable practice protects the forest floor and prevents harmful residues such as fuels and oils. According to Fischer, the wooden transport is not only traditionally designed by the horses, but also ecologically sensible ( North Sea newspaper ).

craft hits Tradition

Kay Stolzenberg, an experienced horseback, pulls the tree trunks through the Lüneburg city forest with his cold blood. "With every alley that we create for machines, we take its integrity to the forest," he says. The use of back horses is particularly valuable because it minimizes the load on the soil and at the same time protects nature. Wittenburg emphasizes that this form of wood transport is not only effective, but also maintains the tradition and craft of horsebacks. Unfortunately, this profession in Lower Saxony is threatened with extinction, with just a few full -time horsebacks, including Stolzenberg. "In the past I was traveling for the wooden harvest throughout Germany. It would be a shame if this profession dies out," he comments ( Zeit ).

This use of backpfer not only proves to be a return to environmentally friendly methods, but also as a passionate commitment to a sustainable future of forestry. While the machines are getting bigger and more clumsy, horses often remain the last hope for the conscious management of the forests. Stolzenberg's commitment shows how tradition and innovation can go hand in hand in nature.
