Five -minute conversation on the plane brought great love
On a recent transatlantic flight from Florida to London Heathrow, the married flight attendant Hunter Smith-Lihas and John Lihas blocked over the aisle. The two men smiled at each other before they returned quickly to serve champagne for first class travelers. A short smile that only lasted for a moment was versatile. Later, when Hunter and John had a break at the same time, they sat in the crew room of the aircraft and reflected on the common life and the careers they had assembled together.
The first encounter
"I hit you on the plane for five minutes when I shouldn't, and now we live together in the city, you are sitting on the plane opposite me and we work together," recalls Hunter when he faces John. "You don't think when you meet someone for the first time so that it would come that far. It's kind of surreal. And it just makes you so happy because you ask yourself: 'How did I come here?'" "
the beginning of a connection
How Hunter and John came here, the result of a series of unexpected moments and decisions that began six years ago, began in 2017. At that time Hunter was known as Hunter Smith and worked in his early twenties as a gate agent at Spirit Airlines. His dream of working in aviation was created when he began to pursue the experiences of a flight attendant on YouTube. "I thought, 'Oh my god, that's the best job at all. I definitely want to do that,' says Hunter today.
a fateful meeting
After his college degree, Hunter secured a position at the airport in his hometown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In this role, he interacted with hundreds, if not thousands of people, which was a welcome change for him. One morning a colleague asked him to hand over some documents to the captain of a Spirit flight to Orlando, Florida. "Something like that was usually not my job," recalls Hunter. When he handed over the documents, he was waiting for the "go" to leave the plane, and for the first time met John, the flight attendant who was responsible for the front half of the aircraft.
an unexpected connection
At that time, John was a complete stranger for Hunter. But when they had eye contact for the first time and laughed together, both immediately felt a special connection. "I saw you a pin on your lanyard attachment-I think that was a delta airlines pin-and asked you where you got it from," continues Hunter. "That was the beginning of our conversation and thus the beginning of everything."from the first date to love
After only a few days of intensive exchange on Facebook, John Hunter stated that he was in Myrtle Beach during a layovers and wanted to invite him there. Hunter was torn back and forth, but the "good premonition" he felt at the first meeting with John convinced him to take the risk. Although the two and a half hour trip was daring for a first date, the chemistry between them was so strong that they decided to try it.
challenges and height flights
The two have created many common memories for the next few months, while Hunter and John visited themselves in different cities. Despite the distance, their relationship bloomed. "We actually had the time to long for each other and plan special moments," explains Hunter. Even if there were difficult phases in which they had to cancel their contact for a few weeks, they felt connected to each other again and again thanks to their deep connection.
a common life in the cockpit
One year after her first meeting, Hunter was employed as a flight attendant at Spirit Airlines. This also made the decision to contract. The move to Detroit, Michigan, was a new section of her life, since they were not only colleagues but also roommates. "That was the moment when things were really raised to the next level," says Hunter.
The marriage proposal on the beach
on a vacation in Puerto Rico, while talking about their future, Hunter decided to make a marriage proposal. On the second day of the trip he paused in San Juan as they walked on the beach. He knelt down surprised and asked if John wanted to marry him. John was speechlessly surprised and immediately said "yes". The happiness they felt that day was overwhelming and brought their love to the next level.
an exciting new chapter
Today Hunter and John live in Florida and no longer work on Spirit Airlines, but have joined a new large American airline. This decision was made at a time when the industry was recovering from pandemic. Nevertheless, the trip did not stop for the two. "This is the job we both dream of," emphasizes Hunter. "There is always a surprise moment in this profession."
How Hunter summarizes later: "It shows that you never know who you will meet where and when. You just never know who this could be a special person."
