EU initiative: Strengthening vocational training for Austria's future!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - Europe faces a crucial turn in vocational training! The Austria Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ) emphasizes the great importance of comprehensive training to strengthen competitiveness in international markets. Mariana Kühnel, Deputy Secretary General of the WKÖ, explains: "The best possible training and further education is the central puzzle stone in coping with digital transformation." The freshly launched EU initiative "Union of Skills", while initiating Roxana Mînzatu, is intended to promote securing skilled workers within the EU. A special focus is on MINT funding (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology) as well as digital skills. This is considered essential for the future of the European economy.

The reality of vocational training

The new EU Commission plans to raise dual training to a new level. As early as the first quarter of 2025, the first measures are to be implemented that provide a central role for social partners and industry associations. However, Kühnel warns: "The strengthening must never lead to leveling down." The extent and quality of the training must remain presumed - this applies particularly to established degrees such as the apprenticeship in Austria. The aim is to secure high-quality professional vocational qualification, supported by new EU-wide VET-Diplomas and labels.

In addition, research projects by the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB) ensure that competencies in vocational training are recognized and promoted. The focus is on the development of competence -oriented education, which conveys seamlessly between professional and academic education. This not only creates open approaches to educational paths and appointments, but also the possibility of effectively documenting and recognizing individual learning experiences. "Competencies are of great importance in all educational sectors," said a statement by the Bibb. In addition, it is worked on interfaces that are intended to revolutionize vocational training.

Kühnel summarizes: "Education is the most important trampoline for professional success." The WKÖ relies on individual funding measures during school time to ensure that every young person is equipped with the necessary basic skills in order to start their jobs successfully. These comprehensive educational approaches are the key to countering future challenges in the world of work and securing Austria's business location sustainably.
