Learn German: The key to integration in Trier!
In Trier, an important project flourishes for migrants that drives the integration of young people in Germany. The “German Starter” program of the youth migration service (JMD) is aimed at refugees and migrants who want to learn the German language in Germany. "Ideally, German funding should start and continuously start afterwards," explains Katharina Moik, head of the youth migration service. However, reality often looks different, because access to language courses is often limited by factors such as age, residence status and limited school places. This leads to long waiting times, especially in older young people.

In order to bridge these waiting times sensibly, almost 70 young people in Trier and Kon are currently learning the foundations of the German language. The project is dependent on donations in order to be able to offer effective lessons. The Lions Club Basilica recently provided valuable support with a donation of 1,000 euros. "It is essential that young people learn the language as soon as possible," emphasizes Elisabeth Schneider, while Dr. Sepideh Gerich emphasizes the importance of integration for society.
In addition to the language courses, the JMD offers preventive offers to strengthen democratic values among young people. Together with partner schools in Trier and Wittlich, the “Respect Coaches” program is implemented, which is supposed to protect young people from radicalization. Here, group offers and workshops are organized that help young people position themselves in an open dialogue and respect different opinions, as on the website of the Caritasverbandes Trier . These measures are part of a comprehensive approach to support migrant youth and to improve their integration into society.
