Mining up close: Students discover the story of Maria Lankowitz!
The students of the elementary school in Maria Lankowitz experienced a very special visit on Barbaratag when Beate Gußmack, a passionate expert in mining, brought them closer to the multifaceted history of mining. Her lecture was an exciting journey through time in the past, in which she explained the creation of the lignite about 14 million years ago. The importance of the railway line for coal transport and the detailed presentation of traditional miner clothing, including the characteristic black mountain coat, was particularly impressive. Then she also told the students with the traditional miner greeting "luck" that the topic of mining is closely linked to the region.
traditions and challenges in mining
In her lively lecture, Gußmack not only addressed the customs of mining, but also the challenges and dangers that are associated with this profession. The children listened carefully when they learned how mine horses and rats were used as warning systems in the mines. The history of mining was tangible with vivid material such as coal pieces, mine lamps and various miner tools. The visit was rounded off with the narrative of the legend of St. Barbara, the patron saint of the miners, as well as the singing of the traditional miner song "Happiness, dear miners", which made the entire event a moving experience.
The municipality of Maria Lankowitz has a long mining tradition that goes back to the 15th century when the construction of the church, monastery and castle began an important era for the place. As reported by maria-lankowitz.at , Maria Lankowitz was one of the largest mining communities in the country until about 30 years ago. Today the community has developed into an emerging tourist destination that attracts visitors with a combination of historical past and natural beauties. While hiking trails and a beautiful swimming lake lure in summer, the winter months offer ski runs and cozy ski huts, which makes the region an attractive goal.
