Wiener Sport Arena shortly before the opening - does the nation stadium come?
Mayor Michael Ludwig and sports city councilor Peter Hacker visited the progress in the construction of the new “Sport Arena Vienna”. This modern sports facility is built on the site of the former Dusika stadium and offers over 13,000 square meters of sports fields, distributed over three independent usable halls. The Sport Arena will accommodate sports such as gymnastics, athletics, handball, volleyball, basketball, floorball, hockey, table tennis and dancing. Mayor Ludwig described the Sport Arena as a "important milestone for Viennese sport", which will offer the youngsters a four-time amount of indoor hours available. The opening of the Sport Arena is planned for the summer of 2025, and in the final phase of the construction work it is important to fully equip the halls.
The overall project has some impressive features. The ball sports hall will offer space for up to 3,000 spectators, while the area for gymnastics and athletics comprises around 8,000 square meters. The city of Vienna is investing around 133 million euros in this project and has set itself the goal of reaching the building "Climate Aktiv Gold". The Sport Arena will thus be the first energy -self -sufficient sports hall in Austria.
nation stadium: skepticism and visions
Although the Sport Arena is considered forward -looking, Mayor Ludwig expressed concerns about the idea of a new nation stadium. He refers to the existing Ernst Happel Stadium and questions the meaningfulness of a new building in millions, since only four to five games would take place there. Ludwig is open to concepts, but sees a long development horizon. He also emphasizes that the Happel Stadium currently covers all event requirements.
Sportstadttrate Hacker confirmed that other projects, including the topic of “nation stadium”, are on the agenda. However, there are no specific notices on this topic so far. Josef Pröll has now become the new president of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB), which could possibly bring new dynamics into the discussion about a modern sports infrastructure.
investments in the sports infrastructure
parallel to the Sport Arena Vienna are further important developments. On October 18, the Vienna municipal council will decide on three large sports infrastructure projects, which should include investments of 258 million euros. These projects aim to create sustainable and energy -strong buildings that also take into account climate protection. All parties in the municipal council approved these measures.
The municipal council committee for social affairs, health and sport launched the corresponding decisions on October 5. Markus Ornig, municipal council of the NEOS, emphasized that the promotion of width and professional sports as well as the climate protection is the focus of the new projects.
In total, Vienna is facing exciting times, both with regard to the Sport Arena Vienna and with regard to general investments in the sporting infrastructure. It remains to be seen how developments in the area of the nation stadium will continue.
