Vienna is investing 54 million euros in new drinking water pipe!
Wien, Österreich - The city of Vienna plans to extend a comprehensive renewal of its water supply infrastructure in order to continue to maintain the high standard of their drinking water supply in the future. Vienna is known for its high quality water, which comes from the Lower Austrian-Styrian Alps and is distributed via a sophisticated system of high-source lines, water tanks and an extensive pipe network. In order to meet the increasing needs of the population, the city clearly invests in the expansion of this infrastructure.
A new, 5.5 kilometer drinking water pipe is currently being laid in western Vienna. This fifth main line, which will run from Mildeplatz in Ottakring to Sieveringer Strasse in Döbling, is said to be завершена by spring 2027. The cost of this project amounts to around 54 million euros. The measure aims to improve the water supply in the northern and western districts. The construction takes place in three large sections, whereby the first section is almost complete and covers the area to Richthausenstrasse in Hernals. The second section will begin in spring 2026 and connect to Schöffelgasse in Währing. The third section, which starts in April, will move 3,500 meters of new pipes in the 18th district.
long -term planning and investments
With a view to the future water supply, the city of Vienna plans significant investments. Mayor Michael Ludwig and climate councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky announced on the occasion of World Water Day on March 22, 2023 that the population of Vienna could increase to around 2.2 million by 2050, which would result in an increase in water consumption by 15 percent to 450 million liters a day. Therefore, investments of up to 100 million euros are sought in the water supply infrastructure annually.
rush for sustainability
The construction of the 17th drinking hydropower plant in Döbling, which is to be completed by 2024, is also promoted as part of these large investments. In its function as a water supplier, Viennese water increasingly relies on renewable energies - 16 drinking hydropower plants produce more electricity than is required for your own water supply. In addition, photovoltaic systems are planned on water containers.Current figures on the water supply in Vienna show that there are around 1,500 drinking fountains and 55 monumental fountains that are distributed in parks, playgrounds and at markets. About 30 kilometers of pipelines are renewed every year to keep the quality of care consistently high.
After the project for the new main line is completed, the area around the line is upgraded. New trees, green areas and seating should contribute to improving the environment. The infrastructural measures that are tackled today are an important step to continue to ensure the high standard of water supply in Vienna.
