Vienna gets the large multifunctional arena: starting shot for 2030!

St. Marx, Wien, Österreich - On March 26, 2025, the Vienna municipal council emphasized the importance of the new multifunctional arena in St. Marx. The arena, which is officially referred to as Vienna-Holding-Arena, is a future-oriented project that is supposed to act as an impulse for culture, sport and business in Vienna. With a capacity of 20,000 visitors, the arena will be one of the most modern events in Europe and offer space for large concerts, shows and sports events. The opening of the new arena is planned for 2030, with a large number of up to 145 events per year, which could attract up to 1.2 million visitors.

The total cost of the project amounts to an estimated 620 million euros. CTS Eventim is investing 470 million euros, while the city of Vienna contributes over 150 million euros, including 62 million euros for opening costs. This financing is carried out in the form of a building law interest, a participation in ticket sales and sales participation. The Federal City Councilor Peter Hanke sees the arena as a decisive factor in strengthening Vienna as a leading event metropolis.

sustainability and modern standards

A central element of the project is the focus on sustainability. The arena is built according to the highest environmental standards, with the aim of achieving the desired climate-active gold certificate. This not only underlines the commitment to ecological consciousness formation, but also positions the arena as an architectural landmark. A team of architecture, consisting of Kronaus, Mitterer and Gallister.

The area on which the arena is created is located in New Marx in the 3rd Vienna district. It is a previously broken site next to the existing cattle hall (Marx-Halle), which was originally part of a slaughterhouse and was reserved for the ORF. The city of Vienna has decided to keep the property in its possession, while the responsibility for the construction and operation of the arena is at CTS Eventim.

political perspectives and challenges

The political discussion about the project is lively. While the Viennese ÖVP calls for a rapid implementation of the project and full cost transparency, the Greens are concerned about possible additional costs and the decision not to rewrite after an objection to the nullity of the original award decision by the Vienna Administrative Court. Ultimately, however, a solution was found that provides a reduction in the city's participation to a maximum of 153 million euros.

The arena will not only be reserved for CTS Eventim; Other organizers will also have the opportunity to organize events there. This concept is intended to promote Vienna's competitiveness in the area of international events and position the city as a significant venue in Europe.

With this versatile multifunctional arena, the city of Vienna and CTS Eventim set a clear sign of a modern and sustainable future of the event landscape in the capital.
