Wine construction on the brink: Is the winery coming to Eisenberg?

In the community of Deutsch Schützen-Eisenberg in Burgenland there are current discussions about the construction of a planned winery. This is to be built at the entrance to Eisenberg in the Oberwart district. The winery is initiated by the organic winery Groszer Weine, which belongs to the Lindner Group from Arnstorf. The project also includes a tasting room, a wine tavern and small rooms for visitors. However, the exact start of construction has not yet been determined and is expected to take place in a few years, which will not be without controversy. Residents express dissatisfaction with the project because they feel they are not sufficiently informed. An information event about the rededication of the winery took place in mid-March and surprised some local residents.

As part of the discussions, changes to the local development concept and the digital zoning plan were quickly placed on the local council's agenda. Critics of the project fear that natural areas could be developed by the winery and that the building could remain empty if the concept does not work. Nevertheless, there are also voices among local residents who see advantages in the winery and support the project.

Viticulture and ecological approaches

The organic winery Groszer Weine is located in southern Burgenland, more precisely in Eisenberg and Csaterberg. The special feature of the estate lies in the barren slate soil, which is ideal for growing grape varieties such as Blaufränkisch, Welschriesling and Müller Thurgau. The estate follows an ecological approach to winemaking, using minimal inputs. The grapes are harvested according to taste and not according to sugar level, and the cellar work is also characterized by careful handling of the grapes.

Additionally, only a small amount of sulfur is used prior to bottling for microbial control. The aim of the winery is to create wines that reflect the Eisenberg terroir and give customers a good feeling and taste. Sales take place via online ordering with free shipping.

Challenges in viticulture

Important measures include production adjustments through regional cultivation stops, simplified production of non-alcoholic wines and the promotion of wine tourism and wine exports. In order to meet the need for further support for organic viticulture, the approval of potassium phosphonate is being considered, among other things. In addition, a tailor-made organic regulation was decided at the Agriculture Ministers' Conference in Baden-Baden with the aim of better financial rewards for winegrowers' services to biodiversity via the CAP (Common Agricultural Policy).

Developments in viticulture show not only the importance of this industry as an economic factor, but also its role in the identity of many regions. While the winery project in Deutsch Schützen-Eisenberg is under discussion, the future challenges and opportunities in the wine sector remain in focus.
