Traffic chaos before Christmas: 20 km traffic jam between Oed and St. Pölten!

Oed, Österreich - A massive traffic chaos occurred on Saturday when a traffic jam of up to 20 kilometers formed on the A1 between Oed and St. Pölten. Drivers had to calculate considerable time loss of up to two hours. The crashs occurred from 2 p.m. and led to several injuries. According to the first reports from ORF, dense traffic on the Advent weekend could have played a crucial role in the accidents. This volume of traffic was also reinforced by the seasonal travel activities and the rush to shopping centers. To make matters worse, the ASFINAG urgently advises travelers to plan more time for their trips and to consider alternative routes in order to avoid possible delays, such as on the A10 Tauernautobahn, where massive traffic jams can be expected over the holidays.

Arlbergtunnel reopened after construction work

There was also good news at the same time: the Arlberg tunnel, a central transport connection between Vorarlberg and Tyrol, was put back into operation on November 22nd after extensive renovation work. This work, which costs a total of 75 million euros, included extensive renovations of the roadway and the construction of a new toll point. This most important infrastructural interface was ready for the winter season in good time. ASFINAG emphasizes that this will be the last months of locking the tunnel for the coming years. An extensive diversion concept was developed in advance to optimize the flow of traffic during the construction work. The security measures during the construction phase turned out to be effective because there were no serious accidents.

For the coming years, the Arlberg tunnel is now one of the safest connections in Europe, which is important for both commuters and vacationers. The extensive renovations and modernized structures not only promise increased traffic safety, but also sustainable use of resources, such as the use of recycling materials and energy -saving technologies. This means that predictions can be made about a noticeable relief on the streets, while travelers in the region benefit from the improved conditions, according to ASFINAG.
