Shake in Lustenau: Who will be the new mayor?
in Lustenau, which combines around 25,000 inhabitants from a variety of cultural backgrounds, a decisive mayor of the prison is imminent! After 15 years, the long-time ÖVP mayor Kurt Fischer resigned, and two candidates are now fighting for the successor: Patrick Wiedl from the ÖVP and Martin Fitz from the FPÖ. This choice is of great importance in the city, since it not only determines future leadership, but also deals with topics such as the traffic situation and urban development.
The first round of the election brought Patrick Wiedl 3,482 votes and 36.66 percent of the vote, while Martin Fitz received 2,670 votes (28.11 percent). Simon Vetter from the Greens just missed the jump into the runoff election with 2,655 votes. The other two candidates, Ruth Lukesch (Neos) and Philipp Kreinbucher-Tyler (SPÖ), remained far behind the expectations. According to oe24.at , the runoff is scheduled for two weeks.
campaign issues in the focus
A central topic that moves voters is the controversial expressway S18. While Fitz demands more relief from traffic and supports the construction of an underground car park, Wiedl positions himself against the S18 based on a clear vote of the population. He wants to advance a future -oriented development of the town center, but sees the need to take short -term measures for traffic relief. Both candidates agree that the confusing tempo limits have to be revaluated to improve the traffic situation.
In addition, in the TV duel between Wiedl and Fitz, a clear difference manifested in the views of the integration of the different cultures of the city. While Wiedl advocates harmonious coexistence, Fitz rejects the construction of a new Islamic cultural center, but argues that such a new project could have a potentially split. These controversial topics will be crucial for voters. Since none of the parties have an absolute majority, coalition negotiations are expected after the election, which will further influence the political climate in Lustenau.
