Salzburg's residential project: 12,000 new apartments for the future!
In a pioneering initiative, the city of Salzburg plans to build 12,000 subsidized apartments over the next 25 years. According to the planning councilor Anna Schiester, three quarters of these apartments are to be available as subsidized rental apartments, while the rest are planned as subsidized condominiums. 70 percent of the new apartments are to be built on the existing building land, including by densification of existing settlements and the conversion of commercial areas, such as ORF Salzburg reports .
The urgency of this project is also underpinned by the current living conditions in Germany. In 2022, 58 percent of households lived in Germany for rent, a remarkable number that has shown a significant increase in the past few years nationwide. It is particularly striking that no other EU country live so few people in their own four walls. Only 42 percent of the households were owners of their apartment, which lags behind other countries, such as the Federal Center for Political Education emphasized.
The pressure on property owners grows
The city of Salzburg not only relies on new buildings, but also wants to put pressure on property owners to make their areas available. As part of this strategy, it is announced that the city is willing to exchange land in order to enable the construction of new apartments. Schiester warned property owners who repel the opportunity to develop in the future could lose the opportunity to use their space. This measure is to create a clear incentive to act soon.
