New bike path in Vienna: Security for cyclists and better connections!

Leopoldauer Straße, Wien, Österreich - On December 17, 2024, the Vienna municipal council made numerous important decisions in the field of urban development and cycling infrastructure. So underlined GR Dipl.-Ing. Omar al-Rawi (SPÖ) The nearby green areas, such as the Augarten, which is only 300 meters away, in response to reviews for the interpretation of the area. In a unanimous decision, the area dedication was assumed, which also includes the construction of 200 new apartments in an existing municipal building. In addition, the wheel infrastructure in the outdoor districts, especially in Floridsdorf, is improved by new bike paths. This expansion should not only make it easier to switch to the bike, but also increase general traffic safety, as GR Kilian Stark (green) stated.

community residential construction and cycling infrastructure in focus

The initiative to improve the cycle paths includes an investment of 100 million euros and the construction of 20 kilometers of new cycle paths annually. Grin Mag. Astrid Rompolt, MA (SPÖ), emphasized the overarching cooperation between the urban offices to create a safe two-direction cycle path that extends from Leopolder Straße to Floridsdorfer Hauptstraße. However, important security aspects have also been addressed: the cycle paths should not be led in the immediate vicinity of bus stations and advertising boards in order to avoid conflicts, as noted. Vienna should continue to establish these measures as a cycling city and change the Modal Split in favor of environmentally friendly transport.

In addition, Grin Heidemarie Sequence (Greens) noted that the existing planning for additional parking spaces in a new municipal building in Tomaschekgasse was not only unnecessary, but also stressful for traffic. A better solution would have been possible here by planting trees instead of parking spaces. However, the permits for the new construction projects met with resistance, in particular the applications for improving traffic safety in schools. Strictly demanded that the city implement measures to enable children to be a safe way to school, including the introduction of speed 30 in front of schools.

The reforms and new plans come back at a time when Vienna looks back on a long history of creating social living space, with the famous community buildings, which have been causing crumible living space since the 1920s. While there are continuous needs, Viennese urban planning is renewed in order to meet the increasing requirements of the population, and this is supported by the Wiener Wohnen, as well as the Wiener Living.
