Large construction site miracle: A3 expansion in northern Bavaria with 1000 workers!
The expansion of the A3 motorway between Biebelried and Erlangen is a central infrastructure project that is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. With a total length of 76 kilometers, the route will in future have six continuous lanes. The project includes the construction of 89 new buildings, including two large bridges with lengths of 295 and 127 meters and two green bridges. In order to implement this ambitious project, up to 1000 workers are in use every day who invest up to one million euros in the construction work.
The project is carried out as part of a public-private partnership (ÖPP), whereby A3 Nordbayern GmbH & Co. KG, consisting of the Eiffage from France and Johann Bunte from Germany, acts as a project company. 50% of the 1.5 billion euro construction sum is pre -financed. This comprehensive expansion includes not only construction, but also the planning, operation and maintenance of the route over a period of 30 years. Despite the challenges such as the Corona pandemic and a lack of specialists, the construction that started in May 2020 is on course.
extensive infrastructure measures
In addition to the main route,In the course of the project, 60 kilometers of subordinate streets and eight new junctions are also opened up. The infrastructure also includes new parking spaces, comprehensive fencing, 137,000 square meters of noise barriers and 76 kilometers of guardrails. After completion, the consortium remains responsible for 25 years, including its own motorway master. In addition, two new parking and rest areas are being built, and the Steigerwald tank and rest area is expanded by 360 new truck parking spaces. The federal government will take over the route on May 1, 2050 in a contractually defined state.
The conditions of this public-private partnership ensure that the private partner is responsible for maintaining and operating the route for a maximum of 30 years, with the public sector retaining ownership on the route. A control by the public sector ensures that it is not a privatization of the infrastructure. The aim of these PPP projects is to quickly remove bottlenecks in the road network. The project thus enables faster and cost -safe implementation of necessary measures in the area of transport infrastructure. Despite the extensive construction work, one billion euros in investments came into play as early as June 2023, thanks to early material procurement that could prevent total failures.
