Gnas in change: How the fusion shapes life in the community!
in the Styrian market town of Gnas, which emerged from the merger of ten communities in 2015, there are still important challenges. Mayor Gerhard Meixner (ÖVP) represents the interests of around 6,300 inhabitants after the merger brought a comprehensive administrative reform. The structural reform, which initiated a significant change in the regional administration, aims to form strong communities and to ensure a fairer distribution of resources and community ownership, as orf.at reports. Despite the positive aspects that this reform brought with it, the topic of fusion remains a central topic of conversation ten years after the implementation, especially in the run -up to the upcoming municipal elections.
The current discussion about community development focuses on the need for investments and improvements, especially in the surrounding communities, which may be disconnected from the resources of the central community. Max Tscherne, top candidate of the independent list and SPÖ GNAS, emphasize that it is important to actively use the positive aspects of the merger. There is already progress, including modernizations at the local middle school and the construction of a new football stadium. Nevertheless, there are also challenges, such as the renovation of the elementary school and the expansion of the network of paths. Investments in flood protection are also pending to ensure the security of the citizens, so gnas.gv.at .
The numbers speak for themselves
The merger of the ten communities has increased the population to around 6,300 and created an area of 85 km². Gnas itself has the largest share with 1,913 inhabitants, followed by Poppendorf and Maierdorf with 689 and 514 inhabitants. Over 450 companies and around 1,800 jobs shape the economic landscape of Gnas, while around 430 students are taught in local schools. The visions associated with the merger strive to form gnas into an economically strong and sustainable habitat, which serves as the basis for all public activities. This was also emphasized in the report by orf.at .
