Increase in unemployment: women are particularly affected!
At the end of 2024, Austria recorded an alarming increase in unemployment: at the end of December, a total of 426,012 people were without a job, which corresponds to an increase of 7 percent compared to the previous year. Women recorded an increase of 9.5 percent with 15,095 additional unemployed, while in men the number increases by 11,912, i.e. 5 percent. The elderly are particularly affected: 112,528 people aged 50 and over are registered with the AMS (labor market service) for looking for work or in training, which corresponds to an increase of 5.9 percent, as from vienna.at is reported.Youth unemployment has also reached worrying proportions and was 67,658 people, which corresponds to an increase of 9.9 percent. Alien job seekers are affected with an increase of 10.3 percent more than local citizens, where the increase is only 5 percent. The situation for young people is particularly critical, because the unemployment rate is 11.4 percent here. A worrying trend is also the increase in unemployment among academics, which at 16.8 percent recorded the highest growth rates. While some sectors, especially the construction, had a slight plus, unemployment in industry rose by almost 14 percent. In addition, the increase in people with disabilities was particularly high at 13 percent. According to AMS boss Johannes Kopf, the recession remains noticeable in many areas, despite better conditions for building and general hopes for recovery.
The government has therefore launched measures to improve training and further education opportunities. In 2024, over 270,000 people were qualified higher. Nevertheless, representatives such as AK President Renate Anderl and ÖGB managing director Helene Schuberth warn of a worrying development if it is not immediately invested in active labor market policy to take the concerns of job seekers seriously and find solutions.
