African swine plague spreads out: alarm in Darmstadt-Dieburg!
By January 9, 2025, a total of 15 wild boars were positively tested for the African swine fever in the west of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. The affected locations are located in the municipalities of Griesheim, Weiterstadt, Mühltal and Seeheim-Jugenheim, as . The first district deputy Lutz Köhler informed about the increasing number of cases on Bergstrasse and the associated challenges for the regional authorities.
The effects and the creation of the required restricted zones are responsible for the state of Hesse, while the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg currently has no information. In order to counteract the spread of the disease, various measures are planned, including the construction of a fence between the A67 and the A5, which is intended to cause costs of 80,000 euros, as well as regular overshoot for observation of wild boar population. Sick animals and rotting are also taken.
Current case numbers and measures
Since the first positive find before Christmas, the affected areas were monitored with drones within a radius of three kilometers. The number of cases by January 8 showed significant differences between the counties: 419 positive cases were found in the district of Bergstrasse, in the district of Groß-Gerau 262 and in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg only 40 cases. A buffer zone is currently being evaluated by the findings, but there are still no new arrangements for such zones.
In the existing buffer zone on Frankenstein, restrictions on forestry and hunting apply. Most of the newly identified positive cases are in the core area of the epidemic, which means that no further changes in the zone are currently necessary. There is hope of building a new protection fence along the A5, which could help to further reduce the spread of the African swine fever, such as rp-darmstadt.hessen.de added.
