Stocker as a chancellor: Historical coalition with great challenges!
Austrian politics has made a remarkable change after Christian Stocker, the previous general secretary of the ÖVP, was sworn in on Monday as the new Chancellor. Severine assessed by established politics, surprises Stocker with a coalition of three parties - the ÖVP, the SPÖ and the liberal Neos. After months of difficult negotiations, he had managed to compromise the political competitors. At the celebration in Vienna, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen praised the new Chancellor for his ability to promote dialogue and to find solutions, as sueddeutsche.de reported.
government program and first challenges
The new government faces major challenges, especially with regard to the difficult budget situation and the geopolitical uncertainties. Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler emphasizes that the government was not only founded to prevent an FPÖ-led government, but rather to address essential issues such as the taxation of banks and real estate giants. These measures aim to make living more affordable for the population. Critics, including the FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl, call the coalition as the "most expensive government of all time" and demand new elections, while he himself played the chance of a government participation because he was not ready to compromise, like 5min.at reported.
There are already tensions, especially in climate policy. While Werner Kogler praises the compromise ability from the Greens, he criticizes the lack of specific measures to combat climate change. Ex-Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler describes the new approaches as "step-it-in". However, Stocker expresses itself optimistic and believes that climate protection is possible without strict laws, whereby the focus is on technology and common sense. The new coalition plans to show in the coming years that progress and sustainability can go hand in hand.
