Vietnam plans ambitious high-speed railway projects
Vietnam has approved the construction of a high-speed railway that will connect the capital Hanoi in the north with Ho Chi Minh City in the south. The estimated costs amount to $ 67 billion.
The new railway line in detail
This ambitious railway line will extend over 1,541 kilometers (957 miles) and create a connection between the Vietnamese capital and the financial center in the south. It is expected that the new train will reach speeds of up to 350 km/h (217 mph), which reduces the travel time from currently 30 hours to just five hours.
political decision and time frame
The decision was made by the National Assembly of Vietnam, the country's parliament. The construction is expected to begin in 2027, and Vietnam hopes that the first trains will go into operation by 2035. In the past, the country has had to deal with delays in other infrastructure projects.
station network and infrastructure
The route will lead through 20 provinces and cities and comprises 23 passenger stations and five freight stations. The new railway will transport both people and goods and also be used for defense purposes, reported state media.
Answer to growing transport needs
The deputy transport minister Nguyen Danh Huy said that the project was an answer to the growing transport needs and that several studies would have confirmed the need for faster options on the north-south corridor. "This project is crucial for the restructuring of the means of transport and serves as the cornerstone for the leap in Vietnam to a new growth era," he said.
financing of the project
According to the state media, Vietnam will prioritize domestic financing for the project, but foreign loans could also be considered, provided that they are affordable and not restrictive.
