Friedländer Bahn: New life for the old route between Neubrandenburg!

The rail connection between Neubrandenburg and Friedland is soon to be reactivated for passenger transport after only sporadic freight transport has taken place in recent years. According to the current reports from SVZ and Nordkurier, the federal government has been promised to renovate the old railway line. The renewed route will have a length of 22.6 kilometers and could soon be available for commuters.

The repair of the "Friedländer Bahn" requires a total of around 8.68 million euros. In order to secure the requested federal funding of EUR 3.05 million, the city of Neubrandenburg and the district of Mecklenburg Seenplatte have guaranteed guarantees of 1.525 million euros each, as the city of Friedland is financially involved in the project. Neubrandenburg's mayor Silvio Witt expressed optimism about the progress of the project.

background to the railway line

Passenger transport on the route was already discontinued in 1994. Since then there have only been occasional goods transport. The previous condition of the route forces the trains to need almost 70 minutes for the almost 30 km long trip. After the renewal, the transport of 100,000 to 120,000 tons of goods will increase significantly annually. Future transports could include solid and liquid fertilizers as well as wood and metals.

The revival of the railway will not only improve the mobility of the citizens, but also support commercial residents who rely on the rail connection. The Friedland agricultural trade in particular could benefit from the renovation because it supplies the region with fertilizers and seeds. Mayor of Friedland brings up the economic impulses that are expected by this infrastructure project.

The decision on the financing by the Neubrandenburg city council is expected to be made on February 20. Costs of around 1.5 million euros are also planned for the renewal of a railway bridge between Ihlenfeld and Neverin, whereby the funding is still being checked by the state and the district.

For a successful implementation of the project, a notice of grant is also expected from the federal government. Stays in the Ministry of the Interior in Schwerin have already received positive feedback on the guarantees, which represent an essential step to approved the funding. There is hope that the first investments can take place in the period 2025/26.

These developments attract both progress for freight traffic and a perspective resumption of passenger transport, which could strengthen the entire region.
