Construction work on the Königssee: reconstruction of the bobsleigh and toboggan run begins!

The bob and toboggan run will be rebuilt after the devastating destruction in the summer of 2021. This was affected after a storm of thousands of tons of scree and mud. In order to prevent future floods, the Berchtesgaden district is establishing a slide -free lock that will offer around 6,900 cubic meters of retention room. According to District Administrator Bernhard Kern (CSU), the security of the railway and the resident is the top priority. The total costs of the project amount to around 50 million euros, which are completely covered by the federal government. The training company is scheduled to begin at the Königssee next autumn, while the first World Cup race is scheduled for January 2026, as Salzburg.ORD reports.

The construction work has now been officially started. District Administrator Kern and Mayor Hannes Rasp expressed optimistically about progress. This is one of the largest construction work in the district in recent years. The use of the railway for the 2025/26 winter sports season is a declared goal. Critics, such as the Federation of Nature Conservation, have expressed concerns about a planned 23 meter high tower for the men's start and threaten legal steps if their suggestions in the construction plans are ignored. Nevertheless, it is still emphasized that all suggestions have been taken seriously to involve critics in the planning process, reports rosenheim24.de.

safety measures in focus

For flood protection, more than 5 million euros are to be invested. This includes the detour of the Klingerbach and the construction of protective systems to minimize future dangers. The head of the Traunstein Water Management Office, Bernhard Lederer, explains that the newly planned measures aim to contain the risks of georisics in the best possible way. The clean-up work on the railway is already underway in order to offer the athletes a safer training and competition site.
