Marcel Steiner: Review and fresh start in racing with 50!

The motorsport world is eagerly observing the development of Marcel Steiner, an experienced racing driver from Switzerland, whose season 2024 has so far been anything but optimal. Instead of defending the title, the 49-year-old now thinks of 2025 and looks into the future with confidence.

At his last appearance at the mountain race in Oberhallau, it was shown that Steiner's frustration gradually subsides over the current season. Instead of concentrating on best times, he threw his role as a "taxi driver" in a BMW M135. "I always looked at the stopped time and explained to my passengers that I am usually up to 30 seconds faster here. That already impressed them," said Steiner. This illustrates its adaptability in an unsatisfactory situation.

How everything started

The problems began at the start of the season in June in Hemberg, where Steiner had to give up after only two training runs. He lost over four seconds to the later best times of the new Swiss champion Robin Faustini. The motorized sports car, which was recently driven by a Helftec Honda turbo engine, turned out to be problematic. In addition, there were difficulties with the aerodynamics of the lobart, which had already proven to be inadequate during test drives in Bresse and in the mountain race in Rechberg.

Steiner spoke openly about his difficulties when he said: "The title win in the previous year had motivated me very much. But my mood has now overturned." At the end of July, he was forced to end the collaboration with the Italian carbon component Lobart. "Differences of opinion and aerodynamically inappropriate body were the main reasons for this," he said on his homepage. This decision illustrates the challenges with which he was confronted during the season.

the look ahead

Although Steiner regrets not being able to drive in a competitive car for best times, he also arranged himself with this reality. "I have come to terms with the situation, I can't change the situation," he says, underlining his determination. During his last races, he even did not rule out a return to the cockpit for the coming season. "It is already appealing to drive again. But you also have to consider: I'll be 50 years old next year. You ask yourself whether you want to invest so much money and time in a big project again," he said.

However,

Steiner is determined to procure a new car because he does not want to continue with a lobbart. "Osella is no longer an issue," he said, but presented positive perspectives. "There are other sports car prototypes like Revolt and Nova." He already has plans in a certain direction and is determined to tackle the necessary steps quickly. "I already know which direction I want to go," said Steiner.

The racing driver is aware that a new car is connected with a lot of work, but he also sees opportunities. "Faustini only switched from an Osella to Nova NP01 this year. With success," he noted. This gives the experienced driver hope that a change to a new vehicle could help him play again.

Marcel Steiner's journey shows the challenges and uncertainties that the world of motorsport brings. His determination to overcome these difficulties and maintain his passion for racing deserves recognition. The next few months will be crucial to see whether Steiner can implement his plans and find back on the road to success.
