Zoo animal of the year: award ceremony in Stuttgart Wilhelma today!

On January 13, 2025, the “Zooier of the Year” will be chosen in Stuttgart. The award aims to draw attention to strongly endangered animal species. The event takes place in the Wilhelma, the only zoological-botanical garden in Germany, and starts at 11:00 a.m.

Agricultural Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) is expected as patron. The campaign, which was launched in 2016, is committed to less well -known, highly endangered animal species. A distinction is made between different animal groups - this includes animals with fur, feathers and scales to ensure the greatest possible diversity.

Goals of the award and species protection projects

The initiative supports specific species protection projects in countries such as Vietnam or South America. Last year the Gecko was recognized as the "Zoo animal of the year", which underlines the continuous effort for protection and the announcement of endangered species, such as t-online.de and Augsburger-allgemeine.de reported.
