Leadership for women: Sara Telek elected referee of the season!
In significant recognition for women's football, Sara Telek was elected referee of the season in the women's Bundesliga. This election took place for the first time this year under the organization of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) and the league. Telek, who is 36 years old and comes from Vienna, has made a name for herself through her commitment both in the women's and men's area as a referee. The ÖFB announced the election on Friday and explained that it was carried out by sports director, trainers and captains of the ten Bundesliga clubs.
"I am very grateful and proud to receive this award," said Telek, adding that the choice also represents a step towards equality and recognition of the referees. Andreas Rothmann, the head of the women's referee's event in the ÖFB, described Telek as an "absolute role model" and congratulated her on this outstanding performance.
The way to the top referee
Sara Telek started her career as a referee and was appointed FIFA referee at the beginning of the year. She had previously worked as a FIFA assistant for eight years. Her European Championship debut, which she celebrated in England at the European Women's European Championships 2022, is particularly remarkable. In addition to her referee tasks, Telek is also involved in the Vienna football community by supporting the “Kick with” project, which was created especially for girls and young women.
The initiatives that support Telek and others take place in a larger context of gender equality in sport. Lisa Paus, the Federal Minister for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth, is committed to eliminating disadvantages in sport in various projects such as "Cliché -free in sports". This includes the sensitization of sports clubs for equality and support from the DFB.
commitment to gender justice
Paus recently visited the women's cup final between VfL Wolfsburg and SC Freiburg and had discussions with important players in women's football. Topics such as the equality of women and girls in German football as well as the underrepresentation of women in central functions, including the referees and trainers, were discussed.
The competence center technology, diversity and equal opportunities e.V. supports the project, which will be funded by the Federal Ministry of Equalizations by 2025. The measures include training, advice and media educational work in order to promote gender equality in sport. In addition to the visibility of women in football, the project aims to ensure the same access to training opportunities and development opportunities for all talents.
In times when equality and visibility of women in sport are becoming increasingly important, the award from Sara Telek is an important step to pave the way for future generations of referees and athletes.
