Facade price in Berlin: Historical building shines in new splendor!

The Berlin local association of Stadtbild Deutschland e.V. recently awarded the "Facade Prize", which honors exceptional reconstructions of historical old building facades in Berlin. The first award winner is a historic building ensemble in Neustätische Kirchstrasse in Berlin-Mitte, which has experienced an impressive return to the original beauty of the stucco facade.

The award was launched from the need to promote the restoration of stucco facades, since in the 20th century many of these artistic elements were removed from the Berlin cityscape. Since then, the loss of stucco facades has been seen as a serious problem. Restores are rare and require both the ideal and financial commitment of the owners.

Details about the award ceremony

The premiere of the "Facade Prize" took place on January 8, 2024. The corner house built in 1880 on the middle and Neustätische Kirchstrasse received the award with a clear majority. Harm Müller-Sprer, the owner and real estate developer, as well as Sebastian Rost, the architect and restorer, were honored for their services. Müller-Spreer initiated the reconstruction of the historical stucco facade of the Wilhelminian style house, while the recovery was implemented by the Sebastian Rost Ornament & Architecture. The reconstruction was based on a few historical photographs.

The award includes a engraving table and a certificate that is awarded to both homeowners, specialist companies and architects. The winner's engraving plate is attached directly to the renovated building. Stadtbild Deutschland e.V. plans to give the "facade price" annually as an audience award in order to emphasize the value of the restoration of historical facades in public. The association wants to encourage homeowners to take an example from the award winners.

In addition to this commitment, Stadtbild Deutschland e.V. is planning to expand its regional, local and city associations in Germany. The main goal is to promote the maintenance and care of old buildings as well as the reconstruction of historical buildings. Interested parties can set up their own part of the association, but must meet certain requirements, including the age of majority and residence in the corresponding city or region as well as the willingness to cooperate with democratic political parties.
