175 years of Teater Snits: Friesen celebrate big anniversary revue!
The theater collective Teater Snits is celebrating a remarkable anniversary this year: it celebrates its 175th anniversary. Teater Snits is the oldest active amateur tone group in Friesland and probably in all of Nederland, as on the website of Groot Sneek . On this occasion the anniversary revue "Sneek Skittert!" instead, with the mayor Jannewietske de Vries presented a Koninklijke Erepenning. This award symbolizes the respect and appreciation of the king for the special merits of the theater.
Teater Snits has been active since 1850 and has committed itself to promoting the Frisian language and culture by presenting two performances every year. In the course of its history, the group has produced numerous plays and outdoor games. It was also the driving force behind the Bonte Sneeker Avenden (BSA), which guaranteed the evenings in the Sneek Theater from 2003 to 2022. The anniversary celebration "Sneek Skittert!" offered a New Year's revue with local stories, quiz and strange events, whereby the idea of sketching, dance and music in cooperation with other Sneker clubs and soloists.
The story of Teater Snits
The origins of Teater Snits lie in the foundation of Krit Snits, one of the first criteria in Fryslân, together with Ljouwert, Burgum and Frentsjer. The goal of Krit Snits was to promote the Frisian language through theater. In the first decades, mainly readings and lecture evenings were organized. In 1902 the first theater performance of Krit Snits took place, which developed into an annual tradition. In 1911 the first own play was listed with the title "Nij Libben", which was written by member Lolke A. Dokkum.
The admission prices were moderate at the time and were 25 cents for members, 50 cents for women of members and 75 cents for non-members. In 1950 the 100th anniversary was celebrated with the performance "Hwat de Tiidtosk EK Fordylget", which was written by YME C. Schuitmaker. To celebrate the 150th anniversary in 2000, the first outdoor "Goudsjeblom en poddekrûd" was listed. 2003 merged with the Snitser Frysk Toaniel and accepted the name Teater Snits, which continues to make an important contribution to regional culture, as is reported on the website of Teater Snits
