Panic in the ÖVP: Kickl's threat brings turbulence into play!
Österreich - In Austria, the political landscape is bubbling: After the failed negotiations with SPÖ and Neos, the ÖVP suddenly sought talking to the FPÖ under the leadership of Herbert Kickl. Ironically, it was the election campaign in which both parties had still shot considerably when it was vehemently excluded to form a coalition. Now the controversial FPÖ boss Kickl becomes active and is shown in his invitation to coalition talks in a combination of negotiation hardness and conviction, while the ÖVP, especially under the new chair of Christian Stocker, already speaks of a threat from new elections, as OE24 reported.
a dangerous game
Kickl has found clear words - he threatens new elections if the ÖVP does not cooperate in the negotiations. At the same time, some ÖVP members show great distrust that Kickl is seriously interested in dialogue. If there is a failure, this could finally tear the already tense nerves in the ÖVP. Stocker, on the other hand, emphasizes that it now urgently needs a stable government and that it is ready to leave the hard words of the election campaign to reach an agreement, as well as the Tagesschau
Despite the deep trenches that have been created in the past between the two parties, there are surprising matches in financial policy. Both parties want to enforce an economic liberal agenda that not only protects large companies, but also pursues a restrictive course in asylum and migration policy. Kickl provokes right slogans and claims a “Austria fortress”, while Stocker emphasizes that his party does not represent any radical approaches; Nevertheless, the ÖVP also requires restrictive migration. However, the greatest hurdle in the negotiations could represent foreign policy, especially in terms of EU policy, which is traditionally important for the ÖVP, while the FPÖ shows anti-European tendencies.
