New cholesterol risk: residual value endangers heart health!
In a groundbreaking research, the Vorarlberg Institute for Vascular Investigation and Treatment (Vivit) presented alarming results on the cholesterol problem in Austria. The study, which has examined around 1,500 people for over twelve years, shows that not only the generally known LDL and HDL cholesterol levels are important, but also the so-called residual or remnant cholesterol. If the values of this cholesterol rise, this can dramatically increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes, especially for patients already affected. Heinz Drexel, a leading researcher of the study, stated in an interview with ORF Vorarlberg: "With the knowledge of the dangers of the rest cholesterol, medicine is only at the beginning." These new findings could result in significant changes in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, which puts the development of targeted medicinal products in the foreground.
high -risk patients in Germany subordinate
At the same time, an analysis of the German Society for Cardiology (DGK) draws attention to a similarly alarming picture as part of its annual conference in Mannheim. In Germany, 2.5 million people with greatly increased cholesterol levels do not reach the recommended target values, which exposes a high risk of cardiovascular events. This applies in particular to high-risk patients, many of which do not receive any necessary drug therapy to reduce their LDL values. According to Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Koenig is necessary for additional therapy for high-risk patients with very high LDL values in order to achieve the desired cholesterol target values and significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. These results prove a troubling discrepancy between the existing guidelines and the actual medical care in Germany.
The new findings from both countries underline the urgency to intensify measures to improve cholesterol values and thus to reduce the cardiovascular risks in the population. Medicine treatment, in particular with statins, must be expanded to protect the health of the patients and prevent life -threatening diseases, according to the conclusions of these important studies, as from orf Vorarlberg and the
